EVSE

Electric vehicle supply equipment — the charger and related hardware that supplies electricity to an electric vehicle.

Why it matters

Statutes and utility rules often use "EVSE" rather than "EV charger." Knowing the term matters
when reading a right-to-charge statute or a governing-document provision, because coverage can
depend on the defined term — for example, California Civil Code section 4745 defines EV charging
stations in common-interest developments.

What to check

Whether the statute or rule defines the equipment it covers (EVSE, charging station, or connector),
and whether that definition includes wall outlets, hardwired chargers, and associated wiring.

Jurisdictional variation

Definitions vary by statute and by utility tariff; the guides citing this term state the
applicable definition where it matters.
