Green home rules by state

Published coverage only. Each state page lists the guides verified for that state, the projects covered, and the official authorities behind them. Local rules, governing documents, and property-specific facts can still change a result.

How to use the state directory

  1. Choose the state where the property is located.
  2. Open the state hub and select the guide for the project or situation.
  3. Check whether the sources show a statewide protection, a condition, or no specific statewide protection.
  4. Then check the local permit office, serving utility, and property documents named by the guide.

What the coverage labels mean

  • Specific statewide protection found: an official source identifies a rule or protection for the covered project.
  • Limited or conditional: the protection depends on conditions such as location, property type, equipment, or timing.
  • State agency or utility rule controls: the practical next step is the named agency, tariff, or utility process.
  • Local rules may control: the state sources do not replace the local authority or property documents.
  • No specific statewide protection identified: the official sources reviewed did not identify one for the stated question.

What may still vary locally

Building and electrical permits, setbacks, historic review, fire access, utility interconnection, and the ownership or use of a roof, wall, parking space, or common area can change the next step. Open the focused guide for the source-check date and the office or document to contact.
