Find the rule for your project

Match the state, property type, equipment, and proposed location before applying a rule. A right to install equipment on your property may not extend to a shared roof, common parking area, or someone else’s electrical service.

Read the controlling source

Official sources are linked beside each answer. Statutes, regulations, court decisions, utility tariffs, and local codes can establish requirements. Agency guidance can explain a process; an agency homepage helps you locate an office but does not grant approval.

Read the cited section together with its definitions, exceptions, effective date, and amendments. Keep the source with your project records.

Keep separate decisions separate

An HOA restriction, building permit, and utility connection are different questions. A state rule limiting an HOA does not issue a permit, and a permit does not establish ownership of a roof or parking space.

When an answer is unavailable

An unanswered question does not mean your state has no protection. Use the Official Source Directory to locate the relevant law or authority. Ask for the specific rule and its application to your property in writing.

Use source-check dates

Each guide shows when its official sources were checked. Check for later amendments or program changes before relying on it. Use the corrections page to report a changed source, missing exception, wrong date, or broken link. The updates log explains changes to rules.
