Interconnection
The physical and procedural connection of a generation or storage system to the utility's electric grid, governed by the utility's filed tariff.
Why it matters
Interconnection is the utility's approval track, separate from permits and HOA approval: the
application, the technical review, and (for export-capable systems) permission to operate. The
rules live in filed tariffs and PUC rules — for example, California's Electric Rule 21 and Texas
PUC Substantive Rule 25.211.
What to check
Whether the project needs interconnection review, what the application requires, and the current
program terms (net metering, export limits, fees).
Jurisdictional variation
Interconnection rules vary by utility and state, and program terms change over time; the filed
tariff in effect controls.
