Xeriscaping

Landscaping designed to reduce or eliminate the need for supplemental irrigation, typically using drought-tolerant plants, mulch, and efficient watering.

Why it matters

Xeriscaping and other water-saving landscapes can conflict with HOA aesthetic rules and municipal
water codes. Some states limit how associations may regulate water-conserving landscapes, while
localities may require or restrict turf and irrigation.

What to check

The governing-document landscaping provisions, any municipal water or landscaping rules, and any
state statute limiting HOA authority over water-saving landscapes.
