Permit authority

The local government office — usually the city or county building department — that issues permits and conducts inspections for construction, electrical, mechanical, and related work.

Why it matters

The permit authority is the safety approval track: it decides whether a proposed installation
meets the applicable building, electrical, and structural codes. Finding the right office for the
property address matters because city and county jurisdiction can differ even within the same
region.

What to check

Which office serves the property address, which permits the project requires, and what the
inspection process involves. Permits are separate from HOA approval and utility approval.

Jurisdictional variation

Permit requirements and processes are intensely local; statewide codes set the standards, but the
local office administers them.
